Red Cross or ... Red Box... Or What do I think!!!

You heard it here. I can not believe that while I was eating dinner tonight and fixing Luther his dinner too...that someone did not seed an article about the Red Cross' decision to become a diamond.

I am so upset with this... decision.... that I decided to say what I think before they say that they thought... or any of you picked it up.

I come from a long way back. back when the Red Cross... was the Red Cross.

I went through the recent period where the Red Cross had to be the Red Crescent in certain places and then had to be the whatever it had to be... in order to be permitted to help people who wanted, and needed help in those places.

I thought...that is really strange. The Red Cross is not accepted for what good does in some places? So they have to change their name to do good things? This is... bizarre.

But I live here with all of us... and bizarre is no longer a bizarre word. Bizarre is where we are.

It kinda rhymes... doesn't it?

But who invented that bizarre must be where we are?

The Red Cross has always been... to me... the Florence Nightingale of us. I never met her. I admire her for what I have heard she has done for us. But I never met her.

The new Red Box... is just not in keeping with my idea of Florence Nightingale. The new Red Box is cow-towing to someone.

I am not sure who that someone is ....but I suspect its initials...are PC.

If those guys (not to mention gals) at the Red Cross are going to change their names to Red Box... or more PC... to Red Diamond .... then I am gonna change my name to "Anonymous". And I am going to put them on the "no call list."

I won't be an "Anonymous" donor any more. But I will be an "Anonymous" caller. Just to tell them what I think of this disgusting decision on their part. And to tell them why I think... the Red Cross will be missed.

    Dear Michaelj_or,

Changing the name of the Red Cross to the Red Box or the Red Diamond won't change who they are. They will always be the Red Cross to everyone. Kinda like you can take "under God" out of the pledge, but we will still be one nation under God. Er...maybe that should be in the atheist comments.

Anyway, I'm with you. Giving in and changing their name sucks. Next thing you know people will be calling it the Red Square...

I was thinking this was a secular progressive move but maybe it's the communists. Isn't that the "C" in ACLU?

Thanks for calling this to my attention. I quit donating to the Red Cross/box/diamond when Elizabeth Dole was their president and was making $100k annually. I thought she should have been volunteering with just her expenses paid. But 100k plus expenses when she and Bob don't need the money. How about giving my donation to the poor starving children in Africa?

Then I quit giving when I found out they charge for their coffee...even charge G.I.s and Katrina victims. I support a lot of other philanthropies, but not the Red Cross/box/diamond. Still, it's an international icon and their name shouldn't be altered to satisfy a few SP's. Okay, call me a TW, I am. I am also a former donor to the Red Cross (not Box or Square or Diamond.)

Let me know when you find out who's behind this. I guess it's too late to change it back, but at least I can passify myself by not sending any more donations.

    Dear Meredith...

I am not sure who is.... behind it. But I am pretty sure whose behind it is.

It is PC's............ and its front end is no more pretty than its back end.

That is why we have Red (?????). They dont believe in themselves any longer. Mr PC took over.

You heard it here. I can not believe that while I was eating dinner tonight and fixing Luther his dinner too...that someone did not seed an article about the Red Cross' decision to become a diamond.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (they didn't change their name, my friend) recently allowed its members to use red crosses, crescents or diamonds while working abroad so that everyone who wants to help, can help. Please, do your research before you condemn decisions that haven't actually ever been made.

If the Red Cross had been originally started by Jews, and was the Red Star-of-David, would you love to work under that flag? What about the Red Crescent? What about the Red Sickle? Would you have donated as much as you do/have to the Red Cross?

My guess is that you would rather work under a Red Cross. Likewise, Muslims would rather not work under a Christian symbol. Israeli Jews, Chinese or Buddhists would rather not work under a Christian or Muslim symbol. (Of course, the Israelis can't use a Star-of-David. How, again, is the ICRC being PC?) So, the diamond was instituted to stop "symbol inflation", if you will. Non-Christian and Non-Muslim countries can use the diamond as a stand in, while in other countries to stop potential conflict.

But, if the "war on Christianity" is more important to you than actually helping those in need, then I suppose you can go on complaining about non-Christians not flying a flag with a cross on it.

At the risk of giving this article more attention than it deserves, there are a few misconceptions here that need to be cleared up:

      • Unless you are significantly older than the oldest living person on the planet, you definitely did not live through the period when the Red Crescent symbol became a valid alternative to the Red Cross. That occurred in the 1870s. The Crescent was officially recognized in the Geneva Conventions in 1929.
      • You seem to completely miss the purpose of adopting the Red Crystal symbol, which is a compromise reached specifically to discourage the addtion of even more national symbols into the ICRC system.
      • National Red Cross, Red Crescent, and Red Crystal organizations are all independent, although associated in an internation federation of organizatons. Each national organization is free to choose which symbol it wishes to use for its organization.
      • All of this information, and much additional besides, is readily available to anyone who would perform a little research into the history of these organizations. You might consider reading here first.
